You should run for a position on the board of your SHRM Chapter!
That’s right, YOU.
You don’t have to be ready. The timing doesn’t have to be perfect. You just have to have a passion for Human Resources and the willingness to advance the profession, especially in your community.
It won’t all be fun and games, yes. The work will be tough, but it will be worth it. You will meet people that will quite literally change your life – personally and professionally. You will learn how to operate a business – because SHRM Chapter’s ARE a business.
And perhaps best of all, you will advance your career. Why? Because associations are where winners meet! And what does it say about YOU if you are a leader of that association???
Most chapter elections are held towards the end of the year. That gives you a few months to put together your campaign and start getting endorsements right? I’m kidding, but you SHOULD use this time to gather information about what positions will be up for election in the next term and make a decision.
While you’re at it, talk to your manager or supervisor to ensure that they will support you in your bid to join the board. It may not be an issue, but the last thing you want to do is risk your day job!
Let the election official for your chapter know that you are interested in running for a position on the board as soon as possible. In most cases this will be the Chapter President, but some chapters have committees that manage the process so do some asking around.
The rest will take care of itself.
You’ve got this!
