Today I went to the SHRM Volunteer info session, the general session keynote and spent some quality time in the exposition hall.
Volunteer Info Session – I Just Don’t Get the Angst!
The SHRM Volunteer info session was as expected, dominated by conversation about the new SHRM Certification. I’m realizing more and more that I’m the odd man out in terms of not feeling anger about this whole thing. Was there a bad roll out? Yes. Is anyone really losing anything in this process? No. I don’t get it, but I will certainly be signing up for the new certification as soon as it is available. After all, what do I have to lose in being an early adopter?
General Session – Don’t Be Defined By Obstacles
The general session was awesome as always. We had surprise introductory speaker in Heather Abbot, who is an HR professional and a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombings. She was followed by the session keynote, Robin Roberts. Both presentations centered on the idea of overcoming obstacles to accomplish great things. I always know I’m watching great presentations when I stop taking notes, I stop tweeting and I get caught up in the moment!
Exposition Hall – As Big As Ever
Post keynote, I wandered around the exposition hall and ran in to a handful of folks from Texas SHRM. We got directions and information that turned out to be completely wrong and ended up in all the wrong places in the convention center. That’s okay, I hit 10,000 steps for the day in the process! Tomorrow, my day starts with Steve Browne’s session; looking forward to it!
