Video: The 4 Ways You’re Being Manipulated (and How to Stop It)

Why do good people do bad things?

It’s cliché, but it’s a good question.

How do we get convinced to act against our own values, to do things we normally wouldn’t do, and even act against our own interests?

According to this video by VitalSmarts Video, the same group that published Crucial Conversations, Crucial Accountability, and Change Anything, it comes down to four tactics that are more common than we think.

From the video description:

“Social science shows there are four different ways to get good people to disengage from their consciences: 1) offer moral justification; 2) minimize the consequences; 3) dehumanize the victims; 4) displace responsibility.”

I know it’s heavy stuff for the start of a new week, but there’s hope! Here’s a quote directly from the video:

“Good people always do good things if they are morally engaged.”

So watch this to stay morally engaged and avoid being manipulated. It’s good information to know – and knowing is half the battle!
