Good old gerrymandering.
I remember learning about this in my high school freshman history class. It was one of those topics it was tough to make a connection to. Today, however, that’s a different story.
When politicians choose voters (instead of the other way around), they choose districts that benefit THEM. This has all kinds of terrible effects on our politics, especially the incentive to collaborate with people who have different points of view.
