Why is time management so hard? Because there is only 24 hours in a day, because we have to do more with less, because time flies when you’re having fun, and million other clichés.
This video offers 10 tips for managing time more effectively. It oddly navigates time management strategy by first stating that most time management tips don’t work. Even so, I think there is value in the video, specifically in these key areas:
“Plan to spend at least 50% of your time engaged in the thoughts activities and conversations that produce most of your results”
Our priorities are often out of balance. It’s easy to spend most of the day working on many inconsequential activities and difficult to focus on the few that make all the difference. You will always be too busy to make time for the things that matter until you force yourself to make time for the things that matter.
“Schedule time for interruptions”
Interruptions are a fact of life in the modern workplace. Do your best to work around them by scheduling time to absorb their impact if at all possible. For example, if you know for a fact that the office doesn’t “settle down” every day until around 8:30 am, plan around it.
“Practice not answering the phone just because it is ringing, or email just because it shows up”
Don’t ignore people, but don’t go full Pavlovian dog every time your phone rings, or every time you see that Outlook notification that an email has arrived. Turn off notifications and respond when you are in a place to do so without disturbing your critical work.
