You know him as Tim Duncan.
We call him Timmy.
He’s been a part of our lives for the last 19 years. A quiet, consistent, winner.
We knew he’d retire someday, and we knew that day was coming sooner rather than later. We savored every moment of the last few years because of that.
That day came yesterday.
While it’s important to keep things in context, I can’t seem to find a way to describe exactly what the Spurs mean to San Antonio. In turn, I also have a hard time describing what Timmy meant to the Spurs and to the city as a whole. I think it’s a relationship that doesn’t exist anywhere else.
Who we were 19 years ago is a far cry from who we are today in every respect.
19 years is long enough to make a profound impact on people, in spite of the distance imposed through a player-fan relationship. In Timmy’s case, that impact came from his quiet leadership, willingness to put the team before himself, and a remarkable consistency that we’d all love to emulate.
Records, wins, and championships speak for themselves. Through it all, Timmy elevated the game without ever losing himself in the process and that’s something that truly deserves our appreciation.
“Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better and your better is best.” – Tim Duncan
