No Sweat: Summertime Blogging

Oh hey, it’s been a while.

I inadvertently took a blogcation over the last few weeks.

One missed post turned into two, two turned into three, and three turned into a handful of weeks where the idea of sitting down to write didn’t stand a chance against the self-preserving laziness of summer in Texas.

Over the years I’ve learned not to sweat it.

Though I haven’t been writing, ye olde ideation engine has still been working. One of my favorite things to do after a break from blogging is to crank out a list of the things that have been bouncing around my brain for a while. Here are a handful of the topics I keep coming back to:

On employee engagement:

Employee engagement, in part, is the difference between a person’s potential and the reality they live at work.

On work culture:

I have notes and scattered ideas on how an organization’s culture is in part defined by whether it skillfully and ethically takes advantages of opportunities, or whether it can’t get out of its own way and misses them.

On coaching:

Everyone needs a coach, and though we all think we’re smart enough to do it, it’s impossible to be your own coach. But damn, it’s hard (and awkward) to find a coach sometimes.

On focus:

I believe in the power of focus in life and at work, but we need to be sure we’re focusing on the right things. An intense focus on treading water gets you nowhere; why not just make the effort to swim to shore?

On expertise:

The “death of expertise” is a real thing, and it’s hurting more than our ability to maintain a fully functional society. It’s draining the souls of our employees.

On politics:

I’ve withheld quite a bit in the area, but I can’t back down from considering writing about the fact that WE ALL LOSE when we dehumanize our brothers and sisters, no matter what your definition of ‘winning’ is.

I admit, it felt great to take a break from writing, even if it was unplanned. It’s too damn hot outside to do anything anywhere this time of year anyway. That said, it also felt great to put a few ideas into writing again. So maybe I’ll get back on the horse. Maybe I’ll write about some or all of these topics.

Or maybe I won’t.

No sweat either way.
