I finally finished reading “Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person” by Shonda Rhimes.
I loved Rhimes’ writing style in Year of Yes; an approach that was informal, accessible and puts you right in the moment.
I felt it when she told her story, and I felt it when she lamented her tendency to default to no. I found myself nodding and cringing when she said that dark and twisty is where her brain likes to settle because dark and twisty is where my brain likes to settle.
What struck me more however, was how no can sneak up on you. No can easily become a comfort that you seek. No can become no without trying if you let it.

When you’re following along with Rhimes’ every tale, feeling every twist and turn, and finding yourself in the process, a paragraph like that makes you sit up and take notice.
No is often the path to comfort and safety, but it isn’t the path to growth.
Yes, whether it be a single yes, a day, week, month or a year of it, is the path to abundance. It forces growth through discomfort and risk.
Yes is open to possibility. Yes wants to learn more. Yes believes in you more than you believe in yourself. Yes wants to try!
Try no matter where your brain likes to settle.
Try because we all benefit when we say no less often; when we don’t let our actions say no for us. Our work, our relationships, and our wellness all stand to thrive from the work that goes into it.
