Last week humanity came to work.
It was our annual HR retreat day. We spent the first half of the day working on ideas to improve our customer service, employee engagement and recognition practices. We recognized each other for work and personal accomplishments. We honored people for their years of service.
The second half of the day was dedicated to healthy movement, games, and activities designed to bring us closer together. And it was an absolute blast!
I got lured into playing basketball, where I quickly discovered that half marathon shape is most definitely not basketball shape. Others played pickleball, volleyball, an HR themed version of Dungeon and Dragons, participated in scavenger hunts, accepted the challenge to walk for 30 minutes on an indoor track, or simply chose to spend the time getting to know the people we spend so much of our lives working with.
At the end of the day, we were all blissfully exhausted.
In a single day, we worked, connected, and played as a team in a way that I haven’t seen in my 8 years at the Alamo Colleges District.
In the days that followed people were stopping each other in the hallway to talk about the retreat, to follow up on conversations had and relationships strengthened. There was laughter, smiles, shared meaning, shared experience, and shared trust.
People who FEEL GOOD at work, DO good work. Without a doubt, we are a better team now than we were at the start of last week.
This is what happens when we let people be more of who they are at work and when we see people for the human beings they are. This is what happens when we let humanity come to work.
Now it’s our job to make sure it sticks around.
