You really need to pick one idea from #SHRM18 and work at it until it’s done.
If you’re like me you have all kinds of notes and ideas to work through in the wake of #SHRM18. It’s hard to know where to begin. It’s even more difficult to imagine taking all of it on in the next few weeks and months. Imagine the amount of work! Imagine the back and forth with stakeholders!
It’s enough to overwhelm you before you even start.
That’s why you need to focus on one idea. ONE. Not three. Not five. Not ten.
Choose the Right One:
The key is to pick the one idea that has the strongest combination of probability for completion and the greatest impact on you or your organization. Look for that one momentum changer. The ONE idea that when completed will clear the path for the next and the next and the next.
It may not be the biggest headline grabber. It may not even be the most exciting idea on your list. It might actually be fairly boring. You must, however, remember that the goal is not headlines. The goal is COMPLETION and to capture the momentum built by completion.
The Power of Focus is Your Greatest Ally:
If you take on too much at once, you and your team will not be able to execute well. Pick ONE. Do the work. Do it well.
As you go build anticipation for the next idea.
Consistently note the origins of the idea. Let everyone know that this ONE idea came from #SHRM18. Make sure everyone knows that there is plenty more where this came from. Build an audience and a group of motivated allies along the way. Remain disciplined, however. Stick to your ONE project until it is done.
When you are done:
If you have chosen correctly, completion of your ONE idea will have made a difference for you or your organization. Doing so will make it much easier to take on that next idea; the next most probable and impactful project. If you’ve done the work of building anticipation for the next idea, you should also have a group of ready and willing change agents that you can call upon for help. This is the time to do so.
Choose your next ONE idea. Repeat the above.
Only this time things will move faster. You will have people helping you. You will encounter less resistance. You will have more momentum. Momentum will build upon momentum and every time you cycle through an idea or project you will get even more to work with.
Will it work perfectly? NO! Will you encounter unanticipated resistance, hiccups, morale and momentum killers? Of course! These are perfectly natural reactions to change in organizations. But remember, we didn’t to #SHRM18 to succumb to the status quo the moment things get difficult. We went to #SHRM18 to do BIG THINGS!
Give yourself the best chance to do so. Play the long game. Focus.
Pick ONE idea from #SHRM18 and work at it until it’s done.
Then go back for more.
