The US Supreme Court ruled that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act bars discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the workplace, in a move that seemingly came out of nowhere.
Just a few days after the Trump administration rolled back discrimination protections for transgender patients in healthcare, this ruling was a breath of fresh air that was worth celebrating.
It was a measured celebration, of course. These days it feels like every victory is either small or immediately followed by some action or event that makes celebrating feel like a fool’s errand. Right now specifically, racism, violence, an administration that seems to promote it at every turn, the ongoing fight for LGTBQ equality, and a pandemic that rages on, makes celebrating difficult.
But for now, I’ll celebrate by wearing this shirt, and I’ll be happy that for the first time in a while, the worst possible outcome didn’t come to fruition.
