This Thanksgiving, in addition to family, friends, and health, I’m making time to appreciate the little things.
In a year shaped by huge events and news that makes us feel completely helpless, I have found respite in attending to simple routines and paying attention to the natural rhythms of the world around me. I’ve noticed when plants have bloomed, when birds migrated, when the weather refreshed everything, when the sun started shifting from spring, to summer, and now to fall.
Noticing these things has amounted to an unintentional, but effective long-term mindfulness exercise.
I’ll likely be calling upon this practice more and more in coming months, hoping that when life begins to slowly shift towards normal that I am able to hang on to my appreciation for all the little things that mean so much to me.
